Post-Operative Care in Ottawa

Safe, Supported Recovery After Surgery or Hospital Discharge

Going home after surgery is the point where hospital support stops and your family takes over. The discharge folder lists dressings, medications, activity limits and follow-up dates, and it can feel like a lot to manage. Post-operative care puts a trained caregiver, with registered nurse oversight, in the home to help with the recovery tasks, so healing is supported and nobody in the family has to carry it alone.

Recovery Support that Starts the Day You Come Home

Post-operative care is the support a person receives while recovering from surgery. At home it typically includes help moving safely, personal care, meals, medication reminders, watching for changes, and getting to follow-up appointments, from the day of discharge until the person can manage independently again.

Freiheit Care provides post-operative care across Ottawa and surrounding suburbs, for recovery after procedures such as hip or knee replacement, cardiac, abdominal and cancer surgery, and for hospital discharges that feel earlier or more complicated than a family expected. A registered nurse oversees the care, nursing care can be added where it’s needed, and we assign the same caregiver wherever possible.

Call 613-518-8258 for a free consultation — no obligation, no pressure.

From the First Day Home to Getting Back to Independence

The first 24 hours: The Ottawa Hospital advises that a responsible adult accompany you after surgery, and recommends that someone stay with you for the first 24 hours. A caregiver can accompany you home and be there through that first stretch if your family can’t.

The first weeks: Help with safe movement, personal care, meals and medication reminders, following the routines your surgical team has set, with an RN reviewing the plan and nursing care added where it’s needed.

Getting back to independence: As strength returns, care steps down. We adjust the plan as recovery progresses, and there is no long-term contract.

Recovery isn’t a straight line. Some days are harder than others, and having someone there who knows your routine makes the hard days easier.

What Post-Operative Care Can Include

Care follows your surgical team’s instructions and is shaped around your recovery — what you can do for yourself,
what you can’t yet, and where a family is stretched thin.

Safe Mobility and Fall Prevention

Help getting up, moving around the home and managing stairs safely, with attention to the fall risks that come with weakness, pain and new medications.

Personal Care During Recovery

Help with bathing, dressing, grooming and toileting while movement is limited, delivered with dignity and at your pace.

Medication Reminders and Recovery Routines

Reminders to take medications as prescribed, and support following the routines your surgical team has set, such as rest, activity and diet.

Meals and Light Housekeeping

Nourishing meals, a tidy kitchen and clean laundry, so the household keeps running while you focus on getting better.

Accompaniment to Follow-Up Appointments

A caregiver accompanies your family member to follow-up visits and tells your family how it went, so important instructions aren’t missed.

Nursing Care Where Needed

Registered nurse oversight is part of how we work, and nursing care can be added where wound care or clinical monitoring is part of your recovery plan.

Three Ways to Recover After Surgery in Ottawa — and One May Suit You Better

Public Home Care

Ontario Health atHome arranges publicly funded nursing and personal support for eligible people recovering at home, covered through OHIP. It is usually set up through the hospital’s discharge planner. Hours are set by the program and may be fewer than you need.

Convalescent Care

A short stay in a care facility focused on regaining strength and independence after surgery or illness. In Ottawa, programs such as Perley Health’s convalescent care are accessed through Ontario Health atHome, and set fees apply. Some people choose it first and then return home with support.

Private Care at Home

A caregiver of your choosing comes to your home on the schedule you set, with RN oversight and nursing care where needed. It can start quickly, and it can sit alongside public services, covering the hours and the continuity they may not.

Many families combine them — public nursing visits as a base, with private caregiver hours for the rest of the day. We’ll tell you honestly which fits your situation, including when it isn’t us. If you’d like someone clinical to go through the discharge plan with you first, our Avocats des infirmières service can help.

When Families Call Us About Post-Operative Care

Hip, Knee or Other Orthopaedic Surgery

Limited movement, new equipment and strict activity instructions. Safe mobility and fall prevention matter most in the first weeks.

Cardiac, Abdominal or Major Surgery

Fatigue, restrictions on lifting and activity, and changes worth watching for. Having someone there who knows what to look for brings reassurance.

Recovering Alone at Home

Living alone after surgery means nobody to help with meals, medication reminders or a fall. A caregiver closes that gap.

A Family Stretched Thin

Work, children and distance can make it hard to be there every day. Care fills the hours your family can’t.

A Family Managing From a Distance

Adult children in another city can have a caregiver in the home and a clear update after each visit, instead of piecing recovery together over the phone.

Recognize your situation?

One honest conversation, no obligation. We’ll tell you what a break could look like.

Signs to Watch for During Recovery

These are common reasons to contact your surgical team promptly. Always follow the instructions you were given at discharge.

Call 911 for chest pain, difficulty breathing or sudden confusion. Our caregivers let your family and our nursing team know about any changes they notice, so small concerns are raised early. This is general information, not medical advice.

How Post-Operative Care is paid for in Ontario—including the options that aren't us

Several routes are worth knowing before you commit to anything.

Publicly funded home care through Ontario Health atHome. If you’re eligible, nursing and personal support at home are covered through OHIP, at no cost to the family. You can reach them at 1-833-515-1234. The trade-offs are real: hours are set by the program, so they may be fewer than you need, visit times are assigned rather than chosen, caregiver consistency isn’t guaranteed, and there can be a wait. If you haven’t been connected yet, ask the hospital’s discharge planner before you pay for anything. We’ll tell you the same on the phone.

Family-Managed Home Care Program. Some households also qualify for the Family-Managed Home Care Program, which lets eligible families direct their own funding to a provider of their choice — Freiheit Care is an accepted provider for households who qualify.

Insurance. Some extended health and workplace insurance plans cover part of the cost of home care. Check your policy, and we’ll provide an itemized receipt for any claim you submit.

Veterans Affairs Canada. Eligible veterans can receive funded care through VAC. We’re an approved provider and handle the coordination and paperwork directly.

Private post-operative care. What Freiheit Care provides. You choose the schedule, you get a caregiver matched to your recovery, and RN oversight comes with it. Many families use publicly funded services as a base and add private care on top, particularly for the hours and days public schedules cover less well.

Visits start at four hours, because building a real relationship and providing unrushed, dignified care matters to us. We give you a transparent, itemized quote after the free consultation, with no hidden fees and no long-term contract.

If publicly funded care will meet your needs, we’ll say so. We’d rather be the agency you trust than the one you resent.

Recovery Goes Better With Someone Who Knows Your Routine

A caregiver who returns learns how you move, what hurts, how you like things done, and what a normal day looks like, which means they notice when something is different. A new face each visit starts from scratch every time, and recovery is when you least want to explain yourself again.

We assign the same caregiver wherever possible, and you have a say in who that is and when they come.

Caregiver turnover is the industry’s biggest quality problem, and the reason is pay. In May 2026, Freiheit Care was certified as a Champion Level Living Wage Employer by the Ontario Living Wage Network — the highest tier in Ontario. We pay above the living wage, because that’s how you keep good caregivers long enough for consistency to matter.

Fair pay → the same caregiver stays → they know your routine → changes get noticed early.

Post-Operative Care in Ottawa — Your Questions Answered

Post-operative care is the support a person receives while recovering from surgery. At home it typically includes help moving safely, personal care, meals, medication reminders, watching for changes, and getting to follow-up appointments, from the day of discharge until the person can manage independently again. Registered nurse oversight adds clinical review where it's needed.

A caregiver helps with the practical side of recovery: safe movement and fall prevention, bathing and dressing, meals, light housekeeping, medication reminders, and following the routines your surgical team has set. They accompany your family member to follow-up appointments and let your family and our nursing team know about any changes. Where wound care or clinical monitoring is needed, nursing care can be added.

It depends on the surgery, the person's health before it, and the instructions from the surgical team. Many people need the most help in the first days and weeks, then less as strength returns. We build the plan around your discharge instructions, review it as recovery progresses, and adjust up or down. There's no long-term contract, so care can step down as soon as you're ready.

Private post-operative care is priced hourly and depends on how many hours you need, how often, and whether nursing is involved. We give you a transparent, itemized quote after the free consultation, with no hidden fees and no long-term contract. Publicly funded home care through Ontario Health atHome costs the family nothing if you're eligible, and some households also use the Family-Managed Home Care Program or an insurance plan toward the cost of private care.

Ontario Health atHome provides publicly funded home care, such as nursing and personal support, for eligible people recovering at home, and these services are covered through OHIP. Eligibility is decided by Ontario Health atHome, and the hours provided may be fewer than you need or fall at times that don't suit your routine. Many families use public services as a base and add private care on top.

If you're in hospital, ask the discharge planner or the unit's social worker before you leave, since discharge planning is where these services are usually arranged. If you're already home, call Ontario Health atHome at 1-833-515-1234. A representative checks eligibility and walks you through the next steps. It's worth doing this before you pay for anything privately.

Home care brings support to you in your own home. Convalescent care is a short stay in a care facility focused on regaining strength and independence after surgery or illness, and in Ottawa it is arranged through Ontario Health atHome. Some people choose home care because they recover best in familiar surroundings, and some use a convalescent stay first and then return home with support.

Tell us your discharge date on the consultation call, and we’ll do our best to coordinate care around it. Care can usually start within days of your consultation. The Ottawa Hospital advises that a responsible adult accompany you after surgery and recommends that someone stay with you for the first 24 hours; a caregiver can accompany you home and be there during that first stretch if your family can't.

It depends on what your surgical team has asked for. A caregiver covers daily recovery tasks such as mobility, personal care, meals and medication reminders. If you have a wound to monitor, a dressing to change or other clinical needs, nursing care is the right addition. Registered nurse oversight is part of how we work either way, and we'll tell you honestly which level fits.

Contact your surgical team promptly for signs such as redness, warmth, swelling or discharge at the wound, a fever, pain that is new or getting worse, swelling or pain in a leg, or confusion that is new. Call 911 for chest pain, difficulty breathing or sudden confusion. Always follow your surgical team's instructions. Our caregivers let your family and our nursing team know about any changes they notice.

Yes. Recovering alone is one of the most common reasons families call us. A caregiver can help with moving safely, personal care, meals and medication reminders, and give family members who live elsewhere a clear update, so nobody is guessing how recovery is going.

We assign the same caregiver, or a small consistent group of caregivers, wherever possible. A caregiver who returns learns your routine, your limits and how you like things done, and notices when something changes, which is exactly what you want during recovery.

Our caregivers are vetted, insured, bonded, police-checked and trained in senior care, and registered nurse oversight is part of how we work.

Yes. The consultation is free, by phone, and carries no obligation. Tell us about the surgery, your discharge date and what the surgical team has asked for, and we'll tell you honestly whether and how we can help, including if public services or another option might suit you better.
