A Trained Caregiver in the Home, So Everyone Can Rest
Nights can be the hardest part of caring for someone at home. Falls happen when a person gets up in the dark. Dementia can bring confusion, restlessness or wandering after dusk. And the family member who is listening for every sound is rarely getting real sleep. Overnight care puts a trained caregiver in the home through the night, so your loved one is safe and settled, and you can rest.

Overnight Care That Lets Your Whole Family Rest
Overnight care is care provided in a person’s own home through the night. A trained caregiver helps with bedtime, bathroom trips and safe movement, offers reassurance if your loved one wakes unsettled, and responds if something needs attention. It lets an older adult stay safely at home overnight, and it lets the people who love them get a proper night’s sleep.
Freiheit Care provides overnight care across Ottawa and surrounding suburbs, for a few nights around a hospital discharge or a trip, or as a regular part of a longer-term care plan. A registered nurse oversees the care, and we assign the same caregiver wherever possible, because nights go best when the person beside the bed is someone your loved one knows.

- NOTRE ENGAGEMENT
From Bedtime to Morning — What Overnight Care Involves
Evening: The caregiver arrives before bedtime and follows the routine you’ve described — winding down, personal care, medication reminders, settling into bed. Familiar routines matter most at the end of the day.
Through the night: The caregiver stays in the home, helps with bathroom trips and safe movement, offers calm reassurance if your loved one wakes confused or unsettled, and keeps watch for anything that needs attention.
Morning: You receive a clear summary of how the night went, and the caregiver supports the start of the day or hands over to the daytime routine.
- What a Night Actually Looks Like
A full night’s sleep isn’t a luxury for a family caregiver. It’s what keeps you able to keep caring.

What Overnight Care Can Include
Care is shaped around your family member’s nights — what helps them settle, what worries you, and how often you need cover.
Bedtime and Evening Routine
Help winding down, personal care, medication reminders and getting comfortably into bed, following the routine your loved one already knows.
Safe Bathroom Trips and Mobility
Support getting up, moving safely in the dark and getting back to bed, so night-time trips to the bathroom don’t have to be made alone.
Dementia and Sundowning Support
Calm, patient reassurance for confusion, restlessness or wandering after dusk, using familiar routines and a consistent caregiver.
Recovery Nights After Hospital or Surgery
A caregiver in the home during the first nights back, when pain, new medications or unfamiliar routines make nights harder.
Occasional or Regular Nights
A few nights around a trip or a hospital discharge, a standing schedule each week, or a longer-term arrangement. We can adapt as your needs change.
Nursing Oversight
Registered nurse oversight is part of how we work, and nursing care can be added where your loved one’s needs call for it.
- Knowing Your Options
Awake or Asleep? What “Overnight Care” Can Mean

Awake Overnight
The caregiver stays awake and attentive through the shift, ready to respond the moment they’re needed. This suits people who are at risk of falls, get up often, wander or become distressed at night, or need repositioning or regular checks.

Sleeping Overnight
The caregiver sleeps in the home and can be woken if help is needed. This suits people who generally sleep through the night but shouldn’t be left alone, or who may need help once or twice.

Overnight vs. 24-Hour Care
Overnight care covers the night. 24-hour care is continuous support day and night, delivered by a small rotating team of caregivers under RN oversight. Many families start with a few nights a week and build up as needs change.

Are you listening for every sound at night?
If you haven’t had an unbroken night in weeks, that’s usually reason enough to talk. A short conversation will tell you what a different night could look like.
Signs Your Parent May Need Overnight Care
These are the most common reasons families start looking. If several sound familiar, it’s worth a conversation.
- Is It Time?
- A fall or near-fall at night, or unsteadiness on the way to the bathroom
- Getting up several times a night when you can’t always be there
- Confusion, anxiety or restlessness after dusk
- Wandering, or trying to leave the home, at night
- Needing help to settle, turn or reposition during the night
- Recovering from a hospital stay or surgery and shouldn’t be alone overnight
- A family caregiver sleeping lightly, listening for every sound, and running out of energy
About sundowning. Sundowning describes increased confusion that some people with dementia experience from dusk through the night. It isn’t a disease but a set of dementia-related behaviours. New or sudden changes at night are also worth raising with their doctor. Source: Alzheimer’s Association
When Families Call Us About Overnight Care
Nights That Have Become Unsafe
Falls, near-falls or unsteady trips to the bathroom in the dark. Having someone there turns a risky moment into a routine one.
Confusion or Wandering After Dark
When dementia makes evenings and nights restless or frightening, a calm, familiar caregiver can make the difference between a hard night and a settled one.
Recovery After Hospital or Surgery
The first nights home are often the most worrying. A caregiver in the home gives your family confidence while recovery gets under way.
A Caregiver Running on Broken Sleep
Caring is easier to sustain when you can rest. A few nights a week of overnight cover can change how every day feels.
A Few Nights of Cover
A trip, a procedure of your own, or a family emergency. Overnight care can be booked for the nights you need, without committing to more.

How Overnight Care Is Paid For in Ontario —
Including the Options That Aren’t Us
Several routes are worth knowing before you commit to anything.
Private overnight care
What Freiheit Care provides. You choose the schedule, you get a caregiver matched to your loved one, and RN oversight comes with it. Many families use publicly funded support where it’s available and add private care for the hours it doesn’t cover
Publicly funded home care through Ontario Health at Home
Ontario Health atHome decides eligibility for publicly funded home care and what services are provided. You can reach them at 1-833-515-1234. The trade-offs are real: hours are set by the program, they may not cover the nights your family member needs, caregiver consistency isn’t guaranteed.
Family-Managed Home Care Program
Some households also qualify for the Family-Managed Home Care Program, which lets eligible families direct their own funding to a provider of their choice — Freiheit Care is an accepted provider for households who qualify.
Insurance
Some extended health and workplace insurance plans cover part of the cost of home care. Check your policy, and we’ll provide an itemized receipt for any claim you submit.
Affaires des Anciens Combattants Canada
Eligible veterans can receive funded care through VAC. We’re an approved provider and handle the coordination and paperwork directly.

If publicly funded care will meet your needs, we’ll say so. We’d rather be the agency you trust than the one you resent.

At 3 a.m., a Familiar Face Is Everything
A person who wakes disoriented in the night is calmer when the face beside the bed is a familiar one. A caregiver who returns learns the night routine: which light helps, what settles them, how they like to be woken in the morning. That is what lets you sleep.
We assign the same caregiver wherever possible, and you have a say in who that is and when they come.
Caregiver turnover is the industry’s biggest quality problem, and the reason is pay. In May 2026, Freiheit Care was certified as a Champion Level Living Wage Employer by the Ontario Living Wage Network — the highest tier in Ontario. We pay above the living wage, because that’s how you keep good caregivers long enough for consistency to matter.
- Why the Same Caregiver Matters
Fair pay → the same caregiver stays → they know the night routine → your whole family sleeps.

Overnight Care in Ottawa — Your Questions Answered
Overnight care is care provided in a person's own home through the night. A trained caregiver helps with bedtime, bathroom trips and safe movement, offers reassurance if the person wakes unsettled, and responds if something needs attention. It lets an older adult stay safely at home overnight and lets family caregivers get a proper night's sleep.
An overnight caregiver helps with the bedtime routine, personal care, medication reminders, bathroom trips and moving safely in the dark, and settling back to sleep. They offer calm reassurance if your loved one wakes confused or anxious, keep watch for anything that needs attention, and give you a clear summary of the night in the morning.
With awake overnight care, the caregiver stays awake and attentive through the shift. This suits people at risk of falls, who get up often, who wander or become distressed at night, or who need repositioning. With sleeping overnight care, the caregiver sleeps in the home and can be woken if help is needed, which suits people who generally sleep through the night but shouldn't be alone. Tell us what your family member's nights look like and we'll help you work out which level of support fits.
Overnight care covers the night. 24-hour care is continuous support day and night, delivered by a small rotating team of caregivers under RN oversight. Many families start with a few nights a week and build up as needs change.
Private overnight care is priced hourly and depends on how many nights you need, the length of each shift, and whether nursing is involved. We give you a transparent, itemized quote after the free consultation, with no hidden fees and no long-term contract. Some households also use the Family-Managed Home Care Program, an extended health insurance plan, or Veterans Affairs Canada funding toward the cost.
Publicly funded home care in Ontario is arranged through Ontario Health atHome, which decides eligibility and the services provided (1-833-515-1234). Many families use publicly funded support where it's available and add private care for the hours it doesn't cover, which for many families includes nights. Some households also qualify for the Family-Managed Home Care Program, and some insurance plans cover part of the cost of home care.
Yes. Many families start with one or two nights a week, or book a few nights around a hospital discharge, a trip or a stretch of poor sleep. We can adapt to your needs as they change, and care can usually start within days of your consultation.
Common signs include a fall or near-fall at night, getting up several times a night, confusion or restlessness after dusk, wandering or trying to leave the home, needing help to settle or reposition, or a family caregiver who is running out of energy from broken sleep. New or sudden changes at night are also worth raising with their doctor.
Yes. Sundowning describes increased confusion, anxiety or restlessness that some people with dementia experience from dusk through the night. A calm, consistent caregiver, familiar routines and quiet reassurance help, and our caregivers are trained in senior care, including dementia care. Registered nurse oversight is part of how we work.
It's a common worry, and it usually eases with the right match. Introduce the caregiver as help for you, start with one or two nights, and keep the bedtime routine your parent already knows. Your family has a say in who the caregiver is. If the match isn't right, tell us. We'd rather change the caregiver early than have your parent dread the evening.
Our caregivers are trained to call 911 for a medical emergency and then let your family know straight away. We also keep our nursing team informed so the care plan can be reviewed afterward.
We assign the same caregiver, or a small consistent group of caregivers, wherever possible. A person who wakes disoriented at 3 a.m. is calmer when the face beside the bed is a familiar one, and a caregiver who returns learns the night routine.
Our caregivers are vetted, insured, bonded, police-checked and trained in senior care, and registered nurse oversight is part of how we work.
Yes. The consultation is free, by phone, and carries no obligation. Tell us what your nights look like and what's worrying you, and we'll tell you honestly whether and how we can help, including if public services or another option might suit you better.
