Personal Care in Ottawa

Dignified Help With Bathing, Dressing, Toileting and Mobility — From Someone Trained to Do It Properly

There’s a moment most families reach where the honest answer is that Dad can’t get out of the bath safely anymore, or Mom hasn’t showered properly in three weeks. It’s not a conversation anyone wants to have. A trained Personal Support Worker makes it a routine part of the day instead of a crisis — and lets you go back to being a son or daughter rather than a caregiver.

Compassionate Companion Care Across Ottawa & Surrounding Communities

Personal Care Is the Hardest Help to Accept — and the Hardest to Give

Everything else in home care can be framed as convenience. Personal care can’t. Bathing, dressing, toileting, and continence support touch the parts of daily life people spend their whole adult lives keeping private, and asking for that help is the moment many seniors feel their independence has genuinely changed.

We take that seriously. Our personal support workers are trained not just in the technique—safe transfers, skin care, proper bathing sequence—but in how to do it without making someone feel diminished. That means covering what doesn’t need to be exposed, narrating before touching, working at the client’s pace instead of the schedule’s, and treating a shower as an ordinary morning routine rather than a procedure.

Freiheit Care provides personal care at home across Ottawa, Kanata, Nepean, Barrhaven, Orléans, Vanier, Stittsville, Gloucester, Manotick with a registered nurse overseeing the plan.

Call 613-518-8258 for a free consultation—no obligation, no pressure.

"My Mother Won't Let Me Help Her Shower"

We hear this constantly, and it is not stubbornness. Being undressed in front of your own child inverts a relationship that took a lifetime to build. Most parents would genuinely rather go unwashed than let a son or daughter see them that way — and most adult children, if they’re honest, find it just as hard from their side.

Here is what families are often surprised to learn: a professional is easier to accept than a family member. A trained PSW carries no history. There’s no role reversal, no embarrassment about who used to bathe whom, no worry about being a burden to your own kid. It’s a job, done competently, and then it’s over. Many seniors who fought their family for months accept a PSW within two or three visits.

It also gives you something back. When personal care stops being your responsibility, you stop being the person who nags about the shower — and you go back to being the person who visits, talks, and takes them out for coffee. That relationship is worth protecting.

Our approach when there’s resistance: we start with the least intrusive task your parent has already admitted is difficult — often dressing or hair washing rather than a full shower. We keep the same caregiver so a relationship forms. We never rush the first few visits. And we tell you honestly if we think it’s too early to push.

Hiring help with personal care isn’t giving up on the relationship. It’s the thing that protects it.

What Our Personal Care Service Covers

Built around what your family member actually needs, at the level of help they actually want. Nothing more.

Bathing, Showering and Bed Baths

Full showers, tub bathing with transfer support, or bed baths where mobility doesn't allow either. Our PSWs manage water temperature, non-slip positioning, and privacy throughout — and know how to keep someone warm and covered while still getting them properly clean.

Dressing and Grooming

Help getting dressed and undressed, including compression stockings, adaptive clothing, and difficult fastenings. Hair washing and styling, shaving, and oral hygiene. Looking like yourself matters more than most people expect.

Toileting and Continence Care

Discreet assistance with using the toilet, commode or bedpan, and with incontinence products, cleaning and skin protection. This is handled matter-of-factly and without commentary — the single most important thing a caregiver can do here is make it unremarkable.

Mobility Support and Safe Transfers

Assistance walking, getting in and out of bed, standing from a chair, and transfers to a wheelchair, commode or vehicle. Our PSWs are trained in proper technique and equipment — done wrong, transfers injure both the client and the person helping.

Repositioning and Skin Integrity

For clients with limited mobility, regular repositioning to prevent pressure injuries, plus daily observation of skin, bruising and swelling. Anything that changes gets reported to the RN and to your family.

Feeding and Meal Assistance

Preparing meals and, where needed, help with eating — pacing, positioning, cueing, and adapted utensils. Includes hydration monitoring, which is quietly one of the biggest health risks for seniors living alone.

Medication Reminders

Timely reminders and help organizing pill boxes and repeat prescriptions. Where a client needs medication actually administered, one of our registered nurses handles it.

Morning and Bedtime Routines

The two hardest parts of the day. A PSW who arrives at 7:30 to get your father up, washed and dressed — and one who comes back in the evening for the bedtime routine — is often all that stands between staying home and moving.

Accompaniment and Outings

Support at medical appointments, the pharmacy, church or a walk — including washroom assistance while out. Needing help in a bathroom shouldn't be the reason someone stops leaving the house.

PSW, Nurse, or Home Helper — Who Is Allowed to Do What?

These roles are regulated differently in Ontario, and the difference matters when you’re arranging care. Here’s the honest version.

Home Helper (household support)

Handles the house, not the person: cleaning, laundry, meals, groceries, errands, medication reminders. No hands-on physical care. The right level when the problem is the household rather than the body.

Personal Support Worker (hands-on daily care)

A PSW provides hands-on assistance with activities of daily living — bathing, dressing, toileting, continence care, transfers, mobility, feeding, repositioning, and medication reminders. PSWs are trained and certified but are not a regulated health profession in Ontario, which means there are things they do not do: administering injections, sterile wound dressings, catheter insertion, IV care, or clinical assessment. If someone offers you those under a PSW rate, ask questions.

Registered Nurse / RPN (clinical care)

Wound care, medication administration including injections, catheter and ostomy care, chronic disease monitoring, post-operative care, and clinical assessment. At Freiheit Care an RN also supervises every personal care plan, reviews it as needs change, and is available when something looks wrong.

Most of our clients need a PSW for daily care with periodic RN involvement. One agency, one plan, no handoffs.

Not sure whether you need a PSW or a nurse?

That's what the free consultation is for. We'll tell you the level of care that's actually required — including when it's less than you were expecting.

When Families Call Us About Personal Care

After a Fall, Fracture or Stroke

Mobility changes overnight. A parent who managed fine last month suddenly can't get into the shower or off the toilet unaided. Personal care through the recovery window is often temporary — and it's what prevents the second fall.

Following Hospital Discharge or Surgery

Discharge happens faster than families expect and rarely comes with a plan for who does the washing and dressing. Short-term personal care bridges the gap and reduces the readmission risk that comes from doing too much too early.

Progressive Conditions

Parkinson's, MS, ALS, arthritis, COPD, advanced heart failure. Needs escalate gradually, and the care plan has to escalate with them. RN oversight means the plan gets reviewed rather than left to drift.

Dementia and Alzheimer's

Personal care is where dementia resistance shows up hardest — bathing in particular. Our caregivers are trained in redirection and approach techniques that get the job done without a fight. Often combined with our dementia care service.

Spouses Who Are Caregiving

The husband helping his wife transfer at 82. The wife managing continence care alone. Spousal caregivers carry the heaviest load and ask for help last, usually only after they've hurt their own back doing it.

Recognise your family?

One honest conversation, no obligation. We'll tell you what makes sense.

Yes, You Can Request a Male or Female Caregiver

It comes up in almost every consultation and families are often hesitant to ask, so let’s answer it plainly: you can request a male or female PSW, and we will accommodate it.

For many clients — particularly women receiving bathing or continence support, and men who’d simply rather have another man help them — same-gender care is the difference between accepting help and refusing it. That’s not a preference to be talked out of. It’s a legitimate condition of consent, and we treat it that way.

We also match on language, temperament, and practical things that turn out to matter enormously: whether someone is a talker or prefers quiet, whether they’re comfortable around a dog, whether they can handle being told the same story twice. Bilingual caregivers are available across Ottawa and Gatineau, and cultural or faith-related preferences around modesty are accommodated where we can.

If the match isn’t right, tell us. We’d rather change the caregiver in week one than have your parent quietly dread Tuesdays.

Nobody should have to accept intimate care from someone they aren’t comfortable with. Ask for what you need — the answer is usually yes.

How Personal Care Is Paid For in Ottawa — Including the Options That Aren't Us

Three routes, and it’s worth knowing all of them before you commit to anything.

Publicly funded hours through Ontario Health at Home. Ontario funds PSW visits at home based on assessed need, delivered by contracted agencies including Carefor and others across the region. It costs the family nothing. The trade-offs are real: assessed hours are often fewer than families need, visit times are assigned rather than chosen, caregiver consistency is not guaranteed, and there can be a wait. If you haven’t been assessed yet, do that first — start with Ontario Health at Home before you pay for anything. We’ll tell you the same thing on the phone.

Veterans Affairs Canada. Eligible veterans can receive funded personal care through VAC. We’re an approved provider and handle the coordination and paperwork directly.

Private personal care. What Freiheit Care provides. You choose the schedule, you get a caregiver matched to your parent, you get the same person each visit, there’s RN oversight, and there’s no waitlist — care usually starts within days. Many Ottawa families use publicly funded hours as a base and add private hours on top, particularly for mornings, evenings and weekends, which public schedules cover least well.

We give you a transparent, itemized quote after the free consultation. No hidden fees, no minimum contract.

If publicly funded care will meet your needs, we’ll say so. We’d rather be the agency you trust than the one you resent.

Nobody Should Be Bathed by a Stranger Twice a Week

With most home care, a substituted caregiver is an inconvenience. With personal care it is something else entirely. Being undressed in front of an unfamiliar person, again, is not a scheduling issue — it’s a loss of dignity that repeats every time the roster changes.

There’s a practical dimension too. A caregiver who has bathed the same person for eight months knows which shoulder hurts, which side to approach the bed from, that the left leg needs more support on the transfer, and what the skin on the heels normally looks like — so they notice the day it changes.

Caregiver turnover is the biggest quality problem in this industry and the cause isn’t mysterious: pay. Underpaid PSWs work multiple jobs, burn out, and leave.

In May 2026, Freiheit Care was certified as a Champion Level Living Wage Employer by the Ontario Living Wage Network — the highest tier in Ontario. We pay above the living wage, pay mileage between visits, and build toward full-time hours with benefits. That’s how you keep experienced PSWs, and keeping them is the only way to promise your mother the same face at the bathroom door every week.

Fair pay → PSWs stay → the same person every visit → your parent keeps their dignity instead of re-negotiating it.

Personal Care at Home Across Ottawa, Gatineau and the Surrounding Region

We provide personal care wherever your family member lives — their own home, a family member’s home, a retirement residence where the included care doesn’t stretch far enough, or a long-term care home where you want additional one-to-one support.

Bilingual caregivers available — French-language personal care across Vanier, Orléans, Gatineau and Aylmer.

What Happens After You Call

One Honest Conversation

Call 613-518-8258 or send the form. A care coordinator listens to what's actually happening—the shower, the stairs, the nights—and books a free consultation. No obligation, no sales script.

A Registered Nurse Visits

We look at physical needs, mobility, skin, safety and the bathroom setup itself, and talk through what your parent will and won't accept. You get a straight recommendation on the level of care required.

We Match, Then We Keep It Consistent

We match on skills, gender preference, language and personality — then keep that caregiver assigned. Care usually starts within days. If the match isn't right, we change it.

Personal Care in Ottawa — Your Questions Answered

Personal care is hands-on assistance with activities of daily living: bathing, showering, dressing, grooming, toileting and continence care, mobility and transfers, repositioning, feeding, and medication reminders. It's delivered in the client's home by a trained Personal Support Worker, usually on a set daily or weekly schedule, and it's what allows people with physical limitations to keep living at home safely.

Home help covers the household — cleaning, laundry, meals, groceries, errands — with no hands-on physical care. Personal care covers the person: bathing, dressing, toileting, transfers. Most families start with one and add the other. Both can be delivered by the same caregiver on the same visit.

A PSW provides hands-on daily care: bathing, dressing, toileting, continence care, transfers, mobility support, feeding, repositioning and medication reminders. PSWs are trained and certified but are not a regulated health profession in Ontario, so they don't administer injections, perform sterile wound dressings, insert catheters, manage IVs, or carry out clinical assessment. Those require a registered nurse or RPN — which Freiheit Care also provides, under the same care plan.

Yes. Same-gender care matters to a lot of clients, particularly for bathing and continence support, and it's a completely reasonable request. Tell us at the consultation and we'll match accordingly. We also match on language, temperament and cultural or faith-related preferences around modesty.

This is one of the most common things families tell us. Refusal is usually about dignity and control rather than the caregiver. A professional is often easier to accept than a son or daughter, because there's no role reversal involved. We start with the least intrusive task, keep the same caregiver so a relationship forms, and don't rush the first visits. Most clients who resisted for months accept a PSW within two or three visits.

It's priced hourly and depends on how many visits per week, how long each visit is, and whether nursing is involved. We give you a transparent, itemized quote after the free consultation, with no hidden fees and no minimum contract.

Not by OHIP directly, but Ontario Health at Home funds PSW visits for eligible clients based on an assessment of need, at no cost to the family. Some households also qualify for the Family-Managed Home Care Program, which lets eligible families direct their own funding to a provider of their choice—Freiheit Care is an accepted provider for households who qualify. Hours through Ontario Health at Home are often fewer than families need, and schedules are assigned rather than chosen, so many people combine public hours with private ones. Veterans may qualify for funded personal care through Veterans Affairs Canada. If you haven't been assessed by Ontario Health at Home yet, start there.

Our minimum shift is four hours, because building a real relationship and providing unrushed, dignified care matters to us—a rushed half-hour visit isn't the standard we want to deliver. Many families start with a single four-hour shift covering the morning routine and more. We can also do twice-daily visits, extended shifts, overnight care, or 24-hour support with a rotating team under RN oversight.

Yes, that's the standard we hold ourselves to, and it matters more in personal care than in any other service. Consistency is why we became a Champion Level Living Wage Employer — fairly paid PSWs stay, and PSWs who stay are the ones your parent stops having to explain themselves to.

Yes. Improper transfers are a leading cause of injury for both seniors and the people helping them — including family members who hurt their own backs. Our PSWs are trained in transfer technique and the use of equipment such as gait belts and lifts, and an RN assesses transfer safety in the home before care begins.

Yes, and it usually is. Freiheit Care offers the full continuum — personal care, dementia and Alzheimer's care, nursing, respite, palliative and companionship — under one plan with one team, so you don't change agencies when needs change.

Usually within a few days of the free consultation. There's no waitlist for private care. If you're working to a hospital discharge date, tell us and we'll work to it.

Choosing a caregiving agency for a loved one is not an easy decision. After trying a few different options, we were incredibly fortunate to find Freiheit Care. Freiheit recently provided respite care in our home to allow my husband and I to take our first trip in 20+ years. They cared for our intellectually disabled son, teenaged daughter and our dog which allowed us to travel without worry. We received timely updates and knew that the care worker had the support of a nurse (if needed)as well as back up personnel. Meals, supervision, and companionship requirements, and detailed care instructions were followed to the letter. Highly recommend Freiheit for respite care.

For the past year and a half we have been receiving health care assistance from Freiheit. Helen, the co-owner, has been very efficient and pleasant to deal with. She quickly located a nurse with all the skills and values we were seeking, who is a great fit with us. She has checked with us a few times to make sure that things are going well and is easy to get in touch with. Her agency has an effective way of checking that her staff are present and prompt, not that we have had any concerns with that.

I have been a nurse for 23 years and have not had the pleasure of working with such a compassionate and caring team. From the CEO to HR..to payroll, I am treated with respect and am made to feel that I am much more than a number. I can reach out to any of the management team, at any time and am answered promptly. Everything from Communication to being paid is in a timely fashion. I would highly recommend having Freiheit as an employer to my colleagues. I am honoured to work for Helen and the team.

Most of all she told me that she and her physician- husband (co-owner of the company) were proud of their handpicked "team". Finally, she seemed just kind, just so kind and compassionate... you could hear it in her voice and feel it through the airwaves😊😊What a leader she is!! Thank you for your passion, Helen!
