Why We Pay A Living Wage
Yesterday, The Canadian Press ran an article talking about the challenges of staffing in home care. Here are a few of the key points they raised:
- The rate at which PSWs are accepting home-care assignments dropped by nearly 40%.
- Home care PSWs only earn on average $17.30 per hour.
- Lots of workers are leaving home care jobs.
- Seniors are suffering as a result.
We believe that both Caregivers and seniors deserve better. That is one reason why we pay above average wages.
Our Difference
In February, Freiheit Care was certified as a Living Wage Employer by the Ontario Living Wage Network.
Paying at least a living wage to all our staff has always been a core value of ours. Our wages start at $19 an hour, with PSWs in Ontario currently earning $24 per hour. When we care for our staff, we know that they care for our clients. Yes, it means our services are more expensive than some of our competitors, but we strongly believe that this difference is worth it. If you’re a senior, particularly with dementia, and you see different caregivers every visit because of high staff turnover that’s not good for continuity of care. Low wages is one of the main reasons for high turnover in home care.
That is only one of the ways that we invest in our staff. We also offer paid training sessions, we pay our staff as they travel between appointments, and our minimum shift length is 4 hours.
