About Us

A Canadian Family Business

About Us

We’re Canadian and we’re based in the capital city, Ottawa.

You don’t need to live in Ottawa to receive care from us! We currently serve most areas of Ontario and Quebec. Call us today to find out if we can help you.

We are passionate to offer premium quality home care. We respect our staff with equal passion. We believe you will notice the difference when you choose to work with us.

Mark and Helen Reimer are the founders and CEOs of Freiheit Care.

About Us - Mark

Mark is a medical doctor. He was born to immigrant parents in southern Ontario. He has a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Waterloo. He went to medical school at the University of Western Ontario in London. He completed his specialist training as a General Surgeon at the University of Ottawa and has a sub-specialty fellowship in laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery from McMaster University in Hamilton. Mark has an MBA from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and is dual-licensed to practice general surgery in Ontario and Quebec. Mark is part of Freiheit’s corporate leadership team. He does not practice medicine in his role at Freiheit and for that reason he is not able to look after you medically unless you want to see him for a colonoscopy in the Ottawa area, where he continues an active part-time medical practice.

Mark passionately believes that you deserve to receive the best possible care. Mark has years of experience in the public health care system, where rather than the Olympic motto of “Faster, Higher, Stronger”, the emphasis is all too often on “Faster and Cheaper”. Mark believes that proper home care is done more slowly, and less cheaply. At Freiheit, he believes in offering the best possible value for money. That means to offer top-quality care at the most affordable rates possible. It’s not about being cheap. It’s about offering our staff living wages and long-term careers in the health care field. In short, we believe that our staff deserve a respectable professional life and a secure living, so that they can be at their best when they care for you, the client.

In his spare time, Mark loves cross country skiing and swimming. He enjoys learning about information technology and often finds new insights into the meaning of life when he studies the Bible and as he strives to live as a faithful Christian.

Mark’s first language is German. He holds the “Deutsches Sprachdiplom II” which means he speaks well enough to undertake university study in that language. He succeeded at the “Examen de franĉais de l’OQLF”. This exam suggests his French skills are sufficient to practice medicine in Quebec. Of course, he also knows English and would love to learn more languages!

By the way, did you know that “Freiheit” is the German word meaning Freedom? Our company is called Freiheit Care because we want our clients to be Free to Live life fully!

About Us - Helen

Helen emigrated to Canada in 2013 to start up and lead Christians Against Poverty Canada, a national debt counselling charity based in Hamilton, ON. Like so many other Canadians who left behind family and friends in far-away lands and who now call this great nation their home, she went through the memorable process of becoming a Canadian citizen in 2018. She also holds British and Irish citizenship.

Helen is passionate about employee development and bringing freedom to the lives of clients and staff. She knows that you cannot offer quality services to you as the end user, unless you proactively invest in, value and develop everyone involved in offering those services. Helen has held senior leadership positions in a variety of non-profits since 2007 and currently serves on several charitable boards. In 2008 she was delighted to be part of the leadership team of a charity which won the Sunday Times (UK) “Best Company To Work For” Award, recognizing the focus they put on staff development and career fulfilment.

Helen has a First Class Joint Honours Degree in History and German, from the University of Nottingham (UK). She is also an Alumni of the Arrow Executive Leadership Stream and is currently part of the Arrow Entrepreneur Genesis Cohort.

She has a strong British accent, and is also fluent in German and has a “niveau Avancé” certificate in French from the Centre Linguistique du Collège de Jonquière. After studying there last summer she loves that region of Quebéc, the people, the culture and the geography.

Helen also loves anything outdoors, be it cross country or downhill skiing, cycling or mountain biking.

Our Purpose, Mission & Vision

We Bring Freedom

To Our Clients

As we age, we can lose mobility, memory and the freedom to do the things we once enjoyed. With our experienced and dedicated caregiver team we want to restore this freedom as much as it is possible. This could be freedom to go outside thanks to our trained Personal Support Workers, freedom to laugh with our Caregivers, or freedom from pain with our Nursing Team. We assess your needs and match you with the right caregiver so that you are free to live.

To Their Families

We know that families care about their loved ones. We want to bring families freedom from worry. When loved ones are being cared for by experienced, dedicated and compassionate caregivers, you, as a family member, can be reassured that they are being well taken care of.

To Our Staff

Keeping quality staff in the home care and in the long-term care industries is an ongoing and exceedingly important challenge. Sadly caregivers are too often not respected or paid adequate wages. Many need to work several jobs with different employers just to pay the bills. All our caregivers are valued members of our team. We pay all our staff at least a living wage, and our goal is to provide full-time, regular hours with benefits for everyone who wants them.

We Provide Premium Quality Homecare

by valuing and investing in our staff

We offer regular paid training sessions to keep our staff team up-to-date with their skills and to foster a true sense of belonging. We pay above living wages so that our team members can have stable and long-lived careers in home care rather than needing to struggle constantly to make ends meet. As a result of paying good wages, we become more desirable as an employer and can better recruit the best and the most experienced applicants to join our team. When our team travels between client visits, we pay them for both their time and their mileage. We see our team as part of our family. You benefit from this investment in our people. This is what we mean when we say that we offer premium quality care. Doing so comes at a price, but we believe that as our client, you are worth it!

Highly qualified, dedicated and equipped staff give the best home care. All of our care is overseen by medical professionals so you are in the best hands.

Canada's Choice for Homecare

This is our vision. Our goal is to be the most trusted homecare provider, by clients and staff alike.
