What is Palliative Care?<\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>

One of the services<\/a> offered by Freiheit Care Inc. is palliative care at home. Palliative care is the term that refers to the care given to individuals experiencing severe, life-limiting illness. Also known as \u2018comfort measures\u2019, it aims to relieve suffering and improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Palliative care is not treating the illness, but treating the symptoms that the illness produces. For this reason, palliative care is sometimes offered in conjunction with treating the primary illness.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>

What Kind of Services are Provided?<\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>

\u2022 Medical care to facilitate pain and symptom management
\u2022 Personal support services (e.g. personal hygiene, dressing, toileting, assistance with light housekeeping)
\u2022 Psychological support, such as psychotherapy or bereavement services for the individual and family
\u2022 Physiotherapy, dietary planning, pharmacy support, social work & other family services
\u2022 Chaplains and other spiritual advisors<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Who Can Get Palliative Care?<\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Anyone with a life-limiting illness qualifies for palliative care. They do not need to be at end-of-life to receive it.<\/p>

Individuals who may benefit from palliative care are:<\/p>

\u2022 Those living with Cancer
\u2022 Individuals with Heart Disease
\u2022 Those with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
\u2022 Adults with Dementia\/Alzheimer\u2019s Disease
\u2022 Individuals with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) & Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)<\/p>

What Does Palliative Care Include?<\/strong> (The following section is sourced from \u201cWhat is Palliative Care?\u201d<\/a>)<\/p>

Palliative care takes a holistic approach to addressing the many symptoms and complications to a persons\u2019 life-limiting illness.<\/p>

Physical Problems
<\/strong><\/p>

Symptoms or side effects of disease may include:
\u2022 Pain
\u2022 Difficulty breathing (dyspnea)
\u2022 Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
\u2022 Loss of appetite (anorexia)
\u2022 Nausea or vomiting
\u2022 Constipation or diarrhea<\/p>

Treatments may include:
\u2022 Medications
\u2022 Nutritional support
\u2022 Integrative therapies (such as physical therapy, massage therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy [for difficulty swallowing])<\/p>

Psychosocial Problems <\/strong><\/p>

\u2022 Fear
\u2022 Anxiety
\u2022 Depression
\u2022 Caregiver support
\u2022 Failure to Cope\/Failure to Thrive<\/p>

Support is also provided to families at this time, as they are also experiencing these psychosocial challenges<\/p>
